Baptists from Over 130 nations gather in Brisbane for the 23rd Baptist World Congress

Brisbane, Australia – July 7–12, 2025 : More than 3,000 Baptists from over 130 countries convened in Brisbane for the 23rd Baptist World Congress, hosted by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). Under the theme “Living the Good News,” drawn from Luke 4:18–19, the Congress emphasized global unity, spiritual renewal, and the transformative power of the Gospel.

The Congress commenced with a vibrant celebration featuring the resonant sounds of the didgeridoo and a tribute to Australia’s Aboriginal peoples, acknowledging the land’s First Nations heritage. A parade of banners representing 135 nations highlighted the global diversity of the Baptist family. Elijah Brown, BWA General Secretary, urged attendees to pray for a “global revival in every language, neighborhood, and nation.” 

Preceding the main event, the NxtGen Leadership Summit brought together emerging leaders aged 18–35. Participants engaged in sessions focused on personal faith, community leadership, and advocacy. Notable speakers included Pastor Charlie Dates and Kay Warren, who shared insights on leading with purpose in an anxious world.

A Week of Worship, Learning, and Fellowship

Throughout the Congress, attendees participated in daily worship sessions, Bible studies in multiple languages, and seminars addressing contemporary issues. Afternoon activities included workshops, regional gatherings, and performances on the Global Stage, showcasing artistic expressions from around the world.

A highlight of the Congress was the ceremonial signing of an agreement between the BWA and Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. This partnership establishes the first university-based, graduate-level study center dedicated to the study of the BWA’s life, history, and mission.

As the Congress concluded, participants departed with renewed commitment to “live the Good News” in their respective communities. The event underscored the strength and unity of the global Baptist family and its dedication to proclaiming the Gospel worldwide.
