President Ndayishimiye Hails Coincidence of Ramadan and Lent as a Historic Moment of National Unity

President Évariste Ndayishimiye on Thursday February 28th, 2026 described the coincidence of Ramadan and the Christian season of Lent as historic moment, saying the period fell in the same month just days after Burundi celebrated the National Day of Unity and Charity.

Speaking during a prayer gathering organized by the ruling party CNDD‑FDD, The Head of state has described the coincidence, saying it reflects the country’s unity in religious and cultural diversity.

Addressing to political leaders and citizens, in Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi, President Ndayishimiye stressed the need for responsible and visionary leadership, calling leaders to uphold good morals, avoid acts such as killing and adultery, which risk bringing a curse on the country.

 “Killing innocent people and committing adultery are both a curse. This doom is brought by us, the people,” he said. “A leader must be a visionary who clears the way for others. People go where you lead them. If you take them down the wrong path, you bring a curse upon them.”

The CNDD-FDD holds monthly prayer sessions as part of its program of offering thanks to God. The country’s authorities often attend the prayer sessions including its members and church leaders.

Burundi is a Christian nation hosting various religions. According to official data, Catholic Church ranks the first nationwide.

Historically, the Christians and Muslims live peacefully. This is reflected in the country’s key sectors where both religions are equally represented citing schools, political positions, and other areas.

Beyond inter-religion relations, the churches play a key role in country’s development. The latest stances date back in the 2025 legislative elections. Both Muslim and Catholic leaders called for fair and just elections while also deploying its observers.  This move was interpreted as a huge contribution of religions to the country’s stability and macroeconomic.

The president concluded by urging leaders and citizens to abandon behaviors that could bring misfortune to the nation.

“Remain in God and leave all things that can lead us to doom,” he said.
