During a three-day thanksgiving crusade held in Buhumuza Province in the northern country last week, Pastor Dieudonné Mbazumutima, one of the main preachers, outlined the qualities of a true leader, citing sincerity, fear of God, humility, and a servant’s heart.
“People are there, but they need happiness. The happiness of people comes from good leadership,” he said. “It is not enough just to listen; a leader must also find solutions.”
The event, organized from June 18 to 20, 2026, by the presidential family to thank God for protecting them during six years in power, also saw the presence of senior government officials and religious leaders.
Pastor Mbazumutima urged leaders to put God first and give Him honor rather than glorifying themselves. In his sermon, he stressed the importance of sincerity, saying it prevents leaders from lying and committing injustice (Proverbs 12:22).
“God hates injustice,” he said. “Today, dishonesty has become widespread among many people, and injustice is also rampant. But anyone who wants to be a true leader must walk in truth.”
A Heart for Service and Compassion
Pastor Mbazumutima emphasized the importance of serving others, calling on leaders to seek solutions to community challenges and people’s problems while cultivating a large and inclusive heart.
“All those people you live with, all those people God has entrusted to you, you must enlarge your heart and make room for them,” he said, urging leaders to avoid injustice and discrimination.
The religious leader also underscored the importance of showing empathy toward people facing difficulties and treating their concerns as one’s own.
“A person who lacks compassion is of little help to others. A person who is not moved by mercy cannot truly provide assistance,” he said.
Humility: A Source of Eternal Life
In his sermon, Mbazumutima cited Proverbs 22:4: “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth, honor, and life,” stressing the importance of these virtues in a leader’s spiritual life.
“A true leader who knows how to provide solutions to the problems of the people must live as someone whom God has endowed with humility. Honor awaits those who are humble,” he said.
He added that humble leaders eventually receive rewards from God and called on them to embrace this virtue.
To conclude, he urged leaders to repent, acknowledge their shortcomings, and rid themselves of pride.
“What does it profit a person to gain all the things of this world and lose their life?” he asked. “You must live in harmony with God, do what He loves, and shun what He hates.”
Since 2005, Burundi’s presidents have organized similar events, and the ruling party, to which the president belongs, says it has placed God at the center of its political agenda and constitution.
